Beat The Heat When Exercising Outdoors

Summer is here! Time to go outside, workout, have fun, and STAY COOL...

Just because the heat is here, doesn't mean you need to bring your workout indoors. Here are some tips on how you can exercise outside without getting overwhelmed in these hot summer months.

Stay Hydrated

Be sure to drink plenty of water so you stay well hydrated ALL day. Dehydration can cause dizziness, stomach cramps, and headaches.  Don't forget to replace those electrolytes lost during your workout by eating plenty of fruits and vegetables high in potassium.
Check the Weather

Generally, 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM is the hottest part of the day. Be sure to check your local weather forecast and make sure you time your workout to take place during the cooler hours.

Use Sunscreen
It's important to protect your skin from sun damage. Use a waterproof, sweat-proof sunscreen with a minimum of an SPF 45. And remember to lather up on those cloudy days too since you can still get burned.
Invest in Wicking Clothing
Lightweight, breathable clothing is a must. Try to stick with light, loose fitting clothes which will help reflect heat and help keep you cool. Don't forget your hat to shield your head and face from the sun.

Take a Cold Shower
It may seem strange to shower before a workout, but taking a cold shower beforehand will cool your body down. Leave your hair wet and put it in a bun...the dripping water on your neck will feel refreshing. Have short hair? Carry a water bottle with you and squeeze some on your head whenever you need to cool off.
Change Your Workout
When running, hit the trails in shady wooded areas or enjoy the cool ocean breeze by running on the beach. Or instead of running, switch up your cardio by biking in the wind or swimming in cold water.

In closing, be flexible with your workouts when exercising in the heat. Split your usual 30 minute workout into 2 shorter 15 minute sessions. And slow down! Move with less intensity and do intervals to avoid overheating. It's OK to take breaks, too. Your body will thank you.

What Our Clients Are Saying

Dr. Tracy Hernandez and staff at Innovative Therapy & Wellness are the most talented and professional physical therapy group. Dealing with chronic pain for nearly 10 years, I had yet to receive the proper diagnosis and care until I arrived at Innovative. I am now able to use my arm, I'm walking and feel overall significantly less pain.

Dr. Hernandez is the most knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely caring physical therapist and her staff is a reflection of that too. They use the multiple techniques for treatment, and go above and beyond in their care.

I am so fortunate to be treated by the talented staff at Innovative Therapy.
