Lymphedema
Lymphedema is an abnormal collection of fluid beneath the skin resulting in swelling. It most commonly occurs in the arms or legs, but the breast, head, neck, and trunk can also be affected. It is caused by damage to the lymph vessels or removal of lymph nodes, usually related to cancer treatments. In some cases, it is related to a hereditary condition known as primary lymphedema. The lymphatic system is part of the body's immune system. If a blockage occurs in the lymphatic system, fluid backs up and leads to swelling. Although there is no cure for lymphedema, our skilled therapists can help you manage your condition with a combination of techniques including manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), bandaging, exercise, and education.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage
Lymphatic drainage is an essential part of lymphedema treatment. It is a specialized gentle massage technique that helps stimulate the lymphatic system and encourages flow of lymph fluid to reduce edema. Each MLD treatment decompresses the affected area to restore it to a more normal size. This specialized form of massage can also benefit patients with other orthopedic injuries, as it is intended to reduce swelling in a particular region of the body.
Compression: Bandaging and Garments
The use of compression helps to maintain the results achieved with MLD. The compression provides pressure and support to the damaged, overstretched tissues, preventing re-accumulation of the lymphatic fluid in the treatment area. This can be achieved with bandaging, which is a very specific wrapping technique with compression bandages applied by our trained therapist. Another intervention is the use of a compression garment, which is an effective complement to lymphedema management, and can be taken on and off by the patient. Our staff will determine the most effective way to manage your symptoms based on your unique needs.
